CIMBAM keen on Vietnam
Vietnam’s stock market has a bullish outlook, with low valuations of stock prices as the bourse experienced a correction to 900 points earlier this year, says CIMB Principal Asset Management (CIMBAM).
Win: Vietnamese P/E ratio appealing
The VN30 index, which consists of 30 large-cap Vietnamese stocks listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, declined from 1,185 points to 900, before rebounding to around 970 points at present, said CIMBAM chief investment officer Win Phromphate.
The price-to-earnings ratio in Vietnamese equities markets is around 13 times, while net profit of listed firms is expected to grow by 20% this year, said Mr Win.
Vietnam’s economic outlook is also a boon for positive earnings among listed firms, with GDP growth expected to expand by 6.5% annually between 2018 and 2021, making it one of Asia’s highest-growing economies, he said.
Inflows of foreign direct investment, export expansion, robust tourism and vigorous domestic consumption are factors helping to propel economic growth in Vietnam, said Mr Win.
But foreign exchange risk and an increase in public debt are two factors that investors have to take into account when investing in Vietnam’s capital market, he said.
Mr Win said CIMB-Principal VNEQ has been around for a year and the fund invests in Vietnamese equities, with assets under management of around 9 billion baht.
The investment strategy for CIMB-Principal VNEQ is focused on investment diversification, with targeted sectors including banking, construction, consumption and property, he said. The fund overweights mid-cap stocks, which have greater growth potential than large-cap stocks and are resilient towards capital outflows and external factors such as trade wars.
For Thai equities, CIMBAM still has a positive outlook for Thailand’s economic growth this year, with GDP projected to expand by 4.5%. Farm prices keep rising and this will help shore up domestic consumption in the second half, said Mr Win.
